Attracting top talent to your small business is tough. Big companies can offer bigger salaries and better benefits packages. How are you supposed to compete with that? You don’t. Instead, you can attract top talent by highlighting the benefits of working for your small business.

1. Showcase Your Mission

In small businesses, it’s vitally important that each employee connects with the company’s mission. When you’re hiring new employees, make sure you share your mission every chance you get. Not everyone will agree with the mission, but you don’t want to hire those people anyway. The people who love your mission will want to work for you.

2. Highlight Your Culture

Small businesses’ cultures are completely different than the cultures at big companies. The culture at a small business is usually more like a family, which is a lot of fun and provides employees with a healthy work-life balance.

Everyone wants to have fun at work and have a healthy work-life balance, so make those things work for you. Share pictures of your team doing fun things together on your Facebook page and website. Prospective employees will want to learn more about you and end up finding those pictures.

In your job posting, also share how flexible you are. Let potential employees know if you let them work from home once a week, give everyone summer Fridays, or if you’ll let them leave early to catch their kid’s baseball game.

3. Brag about Your Perks

Maybe you can’t offer catered lunches every day, but you do offer quite a few vacation days or a great 401(k) plan. Let your future employees know about any and all perks you can offer them.

4. Offer Competitive Salaries

No matter how great your culture is or how many perks you offer, it might still come down to the money. Find out what small businesses in your area are offering for similar positions, then (at least) match it. Why would someone want to be a cashier at your store for $8 an hour if they can work down the street for $9 an hour?

5. Emphasize Growth Opportunities

In larger companies, employees might only have one job to do and it can take years to advance. That’s not the case in small companies. Your employees will get to wear a lot of different hats and can advance faster than in larger companies. Let prospective employees know that you offer them training and that their work impacts every part of the company.
